On Tuesday, 18 April 2023, the City of Luxembourg, represented by Mayor Lydie Polfer and Aldermen Maurice Bauer, Patrick Goldschmidt and Laurent Mosar, donated five City of Luxembourg buses to the Ukrainian Government. The buses will be used for the transportation of schoolchildren. Also attending the ceremony were Anne Calteux, representative of the European Commission in Luxembourg, and Claude Radoux, municipal councillor, and honorary consul of Ukraine. Through this gesture of goodwill, the City of Luxembourg joins the many public and private entities that have shown their support for the "School buses for Ukraine" solidarity campaign organised by the European Commission. Once delivered, the former AVL buses will be used to provide schoolchildren in the Kherson region in southern Ukraine with a safe means of transport, or for evacuations.

The five mid-sized buses (midibuses) are the short versions of the Heuliez GX 127 model (9.42 m). As the buses are small, manoeuvrable and comfortable, they are ideally suited for use in cities with narrow streets. The delivery of the buses to Kherson – a city that has been severely affected by the occupation of the Russian aggressor – was organised in conjunction with the European Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) in Brussels. The Kherson Regional Council will hand over the buses to the Center for the Service of Educational Institutions of the Kherson Region.

Having expressed its solidarity with Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion, the City of Luxembourg intends to continue demonstrating its unwavering support for the people of Ukraine by providing targeted humanitarian aid.
